The Story of Dream Radio
Valentine’s Day, February 2021:
Caesar indulged in a few margaritas with his wife Carrie.
February 15, 2021:
Jim is confused to see Caesar CALLING on the telephone. We’re mostly text people, you know. Caesar has NEWS:
Caesar has had a lucid dream in which he was sitting by a radio, and it was playing OUR NEW ALBUM. He was frustrated because the radio would only play snippets of each song. When he awoke, he REMEMBERED the bits of the songs, and started singing them. Fighting a raging hangover, he rapidly threw together mini backing tracks for each, and recorded TEN short song fragments and sent them to Jim. There were only melodies, no lyrics, so Caesar sang nonsense around the word “Zamboni” to all of them. He titled the tracks “Zamboni 1” through “Zamboni 10”
Jim was amazed, and together they came up with a plan: They would create this album. Ten songs. Each based on the snippet Caesar remembered from the Dream Radio.
February 16 - July 11, 2021:
The process was simple: Jim would pick a Zamboni track at random (they were not done in order), listen to the melody line and chords, and develop a new song. Sometimes the fragment was a chorus, sometimes a verse. The style, structure, tempo, and key was left up to Jim. Jim would send a Logic file with the full song structure, drums, bass, and synthesizer parts ready to go, and Caesar would work on the vocals and guitar(s). Carrie wrote all of the lyrics for us.
We made two key decisions:
We decided not to constrain ourselves with our previous 80’s focus - the songs could be in any style we wanted. This was permission for us to write contemporary pop, techno, funk, rock, or synthpop (of course).
TELL NOBODY ABOUT THIS. Nobody hears anything until we can spring this whole thing on them.
